Dr. Thompson is a licensed psychologist with over 20 years experience in the field of chronic pain. As a Clinical Health Psychologist he works collaboratively with pain physicians, providing behavioral health assessment and counseling services to their patients. Dr. Thompson has conducted over one thousand pre-surgical psychological evaluations for patients who are candidates for implantable pain therapies, and he has screened countless patients for opioid risk.
Other clinical experiences include three years of supervised post-doctoral training in neuropsychological evaluation, and over twenty years of psychotherapeutic practice and treatment of people with addictions, depression, anxiety, and family issues, all of which may be relevant for patients with chronic pain.
Academic experience includes 21 years of service as an Adjunct Professor in Counseling Psychology at the University of Louisville; teaching Psychological Assessment, Substance Abuse Assessment and Treatment, and Personality Assessment. Dr. Thompson served on the Editorial Advisory Board for Pain Physician, the professional journal of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, and has published articles on the topics of pain treatment efficacy and multidisciplinary pain management.
